Artist Profile

Bernardo Balagtas

Bernardo “Bernie” Balagtas is known for assemblage and sculpture, wherein he employs a motif use of stainless or corrosion-resistant steel and sturdy design, harking back to his early influences of Filipino rural settings, mostly accentuated with small circles that can be a sun or moon hovering on the horizon or on the round constructed brass or metal. This could be a conundrum of his recent works that almost departed from the traditional painting approach he was accustomed to while still serving as a public servant. His works evolved on the topic of idyllic landscapes with urban dwellings in an unknown geography fusing with a lucid red background, but the polished, burnished metals that weld together gave them another meaning and aesthetic evaluation. The significance of space and context in visual art has been recognized by audiences through the mediums of sculpture, assemblage and installation art. He studied Fine Arts in University of the Philippines -Diliman. In 2008 he became anĀ  outstanding student from Angono national high school as the years passed Balagtas joined prestigious art competition hit 2nd placer in 2004 PLDT cover directory and also an Honorable mention in Metrobank art competition. He is also active in participating group exhibits like masters in masters held in Megamall also Pangarap ang hinaharap happened in Ayala heights clubhouse. He is also known for his exquisites design in designing sculptures made of stainless metal and wood.
